Bank of America statement to Excel or CSV
Bank of America statements are well structured: a summary, then deposits, then withdrawals, each with its own subtotal. That structure is helpful for checking a conversion, as long as you watch one detail: how the minus signs are printed. Here's how to get the PDF and convert it cleanly.
How to download a Bank of America statement PDF
In Online Banking: sign in, open the account, and go to Statements & Documents (under the Accounts tab). Bank of America's FAQ says statements with check images are available online and you can view, print and download up to 18 months at any time (Bank of America).
Older statements: in Online Banking, go to Statements & Documents > Request statements. You can order copies up to 7 years back; they're delivered online free of charge, become available 24–36 hours after the request, and stay accessible for 7 days, with an email when they're ready (Bank of America). Download them as soon as the email arrives.
Credit card statements: open the card's Account details page and select the Statements & Documents tab. In the Mobile Banking app, select the card, then Statements & Documents under Account Management (Bank of America).
If a statement won't download, Bank of America suggests trying a different supported browser (Bank of America).
What a Bank of America checking statement looks like
From Bank of America's own sample statement (sample PDF) and its "how to read" guide (guide PDF):
- Account summary: Beginning balance on [date], Deposits and other additions, Withdrawals and other subtractions, Checks, Service fees, Ending balance on [date].
- Detail sections matching the summary: Deposits and other additions, Withdrawals and other subtractions (often split into ATM and debit card subtractions and Other subtractions), Checks, Service fees, each with a total. Sections continue across pages with "continued" headings.
- Withdrawals printed with a minus sign (e.g.
-19.31) inside the subtractions sections. - A note that the ending balance already reflects service fees.
- Many small automatic transfers if you use Keep the Change; the sample shows several per statement.
Common pitfalls converting Bank of America statements
- The double negative. Withdrawals are already printed as negative numbers and sit under a "subtractions" heading. A tool that negates everything in that section turns each withdrawal back into a positive, so expenses import as income. Check a few known withdrawals after converting.
- "Continued" sections across pages. Repeated section headings and page headers must not become transactions, and a section split across pages must not be counted twice.
- Service fees in their own section. They're real transactions; make sure they're in your output, since the ending balance includes them.
- Summary lines mistaken for transactions. "Total deposits and other additions" is a subtotal, not a deposit.
- Lots of tiny transfers (Keep the Change). They're legitimate rows; don't filter them out or your totals won't match.
The check that catches all of these: Beginning balance + total deposits and other additions − withdrawals and other subtractions − checks − service fees = Ending balance. Then compare each section's subtotal with the statement's printed total.
Converting a Bank of America statement with Footed
Footed opens the PDF in your browser and sends only the extracted text for parsing (processed in memory, not stored). It keeps money in and money out in the right direction, skips summary and "continued" lines, and reconciles the result: beginning balance + extracted transactions must equal the ending balance, with any disagreement highlighted before you download. Export to Excel, CSV or OFX.
FAQ
How far back can I get Bank of America statements online? Up to 18 months to view and download directly; copies up to 7 years back can be requested in Online Banking and arrive online within 24–36 hours (Bank of America).
Why do my converted Bank of America withdrawals show as positive? The statement prints withdrawals with a minus sign; if your tool also treats the section as negative, the signs cancel. Fix the column or use a converter that reconciles totals, which exposes the problem immediately.
Can I convert a Bank of America credit card statement? Yes. Remember card statements reverse the logic: purchases increase what you owe, payments reduce it. In QuickBooks, upload card files into the credit card account (guide).
Is a converted spreadsheet acceptable to a mortgage lender? No. Send the original PDF; use the spreadsheet for your own review (mortgage guide).
Convert your Bank of America statement. Footed keeps the PDF in your browser, gets the signs right, and reconciles every statement against its ending balance. Free for 5 pages a day.
