Chase bank statement to Excel or CSV
Chase statements are clear to read and awkward to convert, because a Chase checking statement usually groups transactions by type rather than listing them in one running sequence. Here's how to get the PDF, what to expect inside it, and how to make sure nothing gets lost on the way to a spreadsheet.
How to download a Chase statement PDF
On chase.com (Chase):
- Sign in and click the Main Menu icon in the top-left corner.
- Choose Statements & documents.
- Pick the account and year, then click the Open or Save icon next to the statement.
In the Chase Mobile app:
- Tap the Profile & Settings icon (top right).
- Under Document manager, choose Statements & documents, then Statements.
- Select the account, the year and the statement; it opens as a PDF you can save or share.
Chase says that, depending on the account type, you can access up to 7 years of statements this way. Business accounts on Chase Business Online have a Statements link under the account dashboard, also showing up to seven years (Chase).
When is the PDF the right source? For older months, closed accounts, statements someone sent you, or whenever you need the bank's own opening and closing balances to prove the data is complete.
What a Chase checking statement looks like
From a publicly posted Chase Business Complete Checking statement (example, posted by its account holder), the layout traits that matter for conversion are:
- A CHECKING SUMMARY up front: Beginning Balance, then totals (and counts, under "Instances") for Deposits and Additions, Checks Paid, ATM & Debit Card Withdrawals, Electronic Withdrawals, and Ending Balance.
- Separate sections per transaction type: DEPOSITS AND ADDITIONS, CHECKS PAID (with a check-number column), ATM & DEBIT CARD WITHDRAWALS, ELECTRONIC WITHDRAWALS. Each section has its own total.
- A DAILY ENDING BALANCE table at the end, showing one balance per day rather than a balance after every transaction.
- Dates as MM/DD without the year. The year comes from the statement period at the top.
- Long ACH descriptions ("Orig CO Name… Desc Date… Trace#…") that wrap across lines.
Layouts vary by account and have changed over time, so check yours against this list.
Common pitfalls converting Chase statements
- Rows come out grouped, not chronological. Because each section is listed separately, a straight extraction gives you all deposits, then all checks, then all withdrawals. Sort by date afterwards if you need a chronological ledger.
- Withdrawals are positive numbers inside a withdrawal section. The section heading carries the sign. A converter that just copies numbers will treat every withdrawal as money in. Make sure money out ends up negative (or in a Money out column).
- No balance on each row. With only a daily ending balance, you can't check row by row; you check the totals instead: Beginning Balance + total deposits − total checks − total card withdrawals − total electronic withdrawals = Ending Balance. Each section total on the statement is a sub-check.
- Year-end statements. A statement running from mid-December to mid-January has MM/DD dates from two years. Assign years from the statement period, not from today's date.
- Wrapped ACH descriptions turning into extra rows with no amount. Merge them into the transaction above.
- "Checks Paid" lines without a payee. Chase notes that a description in Checks Paid means it received only electronic information about the check. Expect to categorise these by check number.
Converting a Chase statement with Footed
Footed opens your Chase PDF in your browser and sends only the extracted text for parsing (processed in memory, not stored). It reads each section with the right sign, merges wrapped descriptions, and then reconciles: beginning balance + every extracted transaction must equal the ending balance. If the totals don't agree, Footed tells you before you download, instead of you finding out at reconciliation time. Download as Excel, CSV (QuickBooks Online and Xero both accept CSV) or OFX.
FAQ
How far back can I download Chase statements? Up to 7 years, depending on the account type (Chase).
Why doesn't my converted Chase statement show a running balance? Many Chase checking statements print a daily ending balance table instead of a balance per transaction. Check the totals against the Checking Summary instead.
Can I import a Chase statement into QuickBooks? Yes: convert it to CSV or OFX and upload it in QuickBooks Online. See importing into QuickBooks for Intuit's file rules.
My Chase PDF opens but won't convert in some tools. Check whether it's a scan or a download. Statements from chase.com are digital; a printed-and-scanned copy is read from the page image, which is slower (scanned statements).
Convert your Chase statement now. Footed keeps the PDF in your browser, checks the totals against Chase's summary, and exports Excel, CSV or OFX. Free for 5 pages a day.
