Monzo bank statement to Excel or CSV

Honest answer first: if you have access to the Monzo account, you probably don't need a converter. Monzo exports statements as PDF, CSV or QIF straight from the app. This page shows how, and covers the cases where you only have a Monzo PDF and need the data out of it.

How to export a Monzo statement (PDF, CSV or QIF)

From Monzo's help pages (Monzo, exporting transactions):

  1. Tap Home in the app's menu bar.
  2. Tap the three dots on (or under) your card.
  3. Tap Bank statements.
  4. Choose the date range.
  5. Choose the format: PDF, CSV or QIF.

Pot statements are included. For Savings Pots, open the Pot and tap Pot documents > Pot statement (Monzo).

Business accounts: in the app, tap Home, then Manage next to the transaction feed, then Bank statements; or on the web, log in and use Export statement on the home screen (Monzo).

Which format? CSV for spreadsheets and most accounting software, QIF for tools that accept it (Xero imports QIF, per Xero Central), PDF for anyone who needs the official statement.

For mortgages and visas: Monzo says its in-app statements are original documents, so you shouldn't need them stamped or signed; it can post a stamped copy if a lender insists (Monzo).

When you'd still convert a Monzo PDF

  • The account is closed. Monzo emails a statement with your full transaction history when it closes an account, password-protected, with the password sent to you by text (Monzo). If that PDF is all you have, you need to open it with the password and convert it.
  • Someone sent you the PDF. Accountants, bookkeepers, landlords and lenders receive Monzo statements as PDFs and don't have the app.
  • You need the statement's own balances. A CSV export of transactions is great for analysis; the PDF statement is what proves the period is complete.

Common pitfalls converting a Monzo PDF

  • The closed-account password. Find the text Monzo sent. See opening password-protected statements if you need an unlocked working copy.
  • Pots. Monzo's statement download covers Pots too. If your statement shows transfers into and out of Pots, they're real movements of the main account balance; keep them, or the totals won't match.
  • Be consistent across months. Convert each month the same way (with or without Pot statements) so the periods line up with each other.
  • Day-first dates. Keep DD/MM when importing into accounting software.

Converting a Monzo PDF with Footed

Footed opens the PDF in your browser (you type the password there if it's protected; it isn't uploaded). Only the extracted text is sent for parsing, processed in memory, not stored. Footed reconciles the transactions against the statement's opening and closing balances and highlights any row that doesn't agree. Download Excel, CSV or OFX.
