PNC Bank statement to Excel or CSV

PNC statements open with several summary blocks (balance, transactions, interest) before the actual activity. Those summaries are useful for checking a conversion and dangerous if they get mistaken for transactions. Here's how to download PNC statements and convert them cleanly.

How to download a PNC statement

From PNC's online statements page (PNC):

In Online Banking 1. Sign on to Online Banking and select Accounts. 2. Select the account, then Account Quick View. 3. Select Statements and Documents. 4. Select View PDF next to the statement.

(PNC's customer service page gives an alternative path: Profile and Settings > Alerts and Communication > Statements and Documents > View PDF (PNC).)

In the PNC Mobile app 1. Tap More in the bottom bar, then Statements and Documents. 2. Choose Online statements, then the account and year.

How far back (PNC):

Account type Online statement history
Checking, savings, auto and unsecured installment loans up to 7 years
Credit cards up to 4 years
Mortgage and home equity up to 5 years
Investment accounts up to 10 years

Statement history may not be available for closed accounts, so download before closing.

Virtual Wallet note: PNC's online banking agreement says that for Virtual Wallet customers only a PDF version of the statement is provided, and that the PDF is the legal statement of record (PNC Online Banking Service Agreement). Virtual Wallet charges $3 per statement period for paper statements (PNC Virtual Wallet features and fees), so the PDF is what most people have.

What a PNC statement looks like

PNC's own guide to reading a statement describes these sections (PNC Insights):

  • Account Summary: account number, account holders, services such as overdraft coverage.
  • Balance Summary: beginning balance, deposits and additions, checks and deductions, ending balance, average monthly balance.
  • Transaction Summary: the number of transactions by type (for example, checks paid, ATM transactions).
  • Interest Summary: for interest-bearing accounts, the annual percentage yield earned, days in the period, and "Average collected balance for APYE".
  • Activity Detail: the actual transactions, with date, amount and description.

Common pitfalls converting PNC statements

  • Summary numbers read as transactions. The Transaction Summary contains counts and the Interest Summary contains balances and rates. Neither are transactions. Only Activity Detail rows belong in your output.
  • Average balances mistaken for running balances. "Average monthly balance" and "average collected balance" are not the balance after a transaction.
  • Deductions vs additions. Make sure checks and deductions end up as money out; check a few known payments after converting.
  • Several accounts per customer. If you have more than one account, keep each account's statement separate and reconcile each on its own.

The check to run: beginning balance + deposits and additions − checks and deductions = ending balance, all from the Balance Summary. Your converted rows must produce the same totals.

Converting a PNC statement with Footed

Footed opens the PDF in your browser; only the extracted text is sent for parsing, processed in memory, not stored. It pulls the transactions from the activity section, then reconciles them: beginning balance + extracted transactions = ending balance, with any disagreement highlighted before you download. Excel, CSV and OFX downloads.
