SBI bank statement to Excel: download, password and conversion
State Bank of India gives you several ways to get a statement: OnlineSBI net banking, the SBI Quick SMS service, WhatsApp banking and the contact centre. Some deliver Excel, some deliver password-protected PDFs. Here's which is which, and how to turn an SBI PDF into a spreadsheet that reconciles.
How to download an SBI account statement
OnlineSBI (retail internet banking): go to My Accounts & Profile > Account Statement, select the account, enter the details (date range or period) and submit (SBI FAQ). SBI's internet banking documentation says the statement can be generated for any date range, includes transaction details with opening, closing and accumulated balances, and can be viewed online, printed, or downloaded as an Excel or PDF file (SBI). If you have OnlineSBI access, the Excel download avoids conversion entirely.
SBI Quick (SMS, no internet banking needed): you can request an e-statement for the last 6 months of a savings account by SMS from your registered mobile number. It's emailed to your registered email address as a password-encrypted PDF, and the password is a 4-digit code you choose and include in the SMS (SBI Quick). Check that page for the exact SMS format; it requires one-time registration from the mobile number recorded on the account.
WhatsApp banking: SBI's WhatsApp service includes Download Account Statement as a PDF; register by sending "Hi" to +91 90226 90226 and completing OTP authentication (SBI).
Contact centre: call 1800 1234 or 1800 2100, choose account services, then Account Statement; it's sent to your registered email (SBI).
What's the SBI statement password?
- SBI Quick e-statements: the 4-digit code you chose in the SMS (SBI).
- Other channels: SBI doesn't publish one universal format on the pages we checked. Use the instructions that came with the email or the download. Anything else you read online (including the many "SBI password format" lists) is unofficial.
See opening password-protected statements for safe ways to open and unlock your file.
What an SBI statement looks like
SBI statements use these transaction columns, documented consistently by several import tools (OwnFi, StatementLab):
| Column | Notes |
|---|---|
| Txn Date | Transaction date |
| Value Date | Date it counted for interest |
| Description | UPI, NEFT, IMPS, cheque, interest narrations |
| Ref No./Cheque No. | Reference or cheque number |
| Debit | Money out |
| Credit | Money in |
| Balance | Balance after the row |
Above the table, the header carries the account holder, account number, branch and IFSC, and SBI's own documentation says the statement includes opening and closing balances (SBI).
Common pitfalls converting SBI statements
- Wrapped UPI descriptions. Strings like "TO TRANSFER-UPI/DR/…" run past the column width and wrap, splitting one transaction across rows. Merge lines that have no date or amount into the row above.
- Balance with Cr/Dr text instead of a sign. If your balances carry a Cr or Dr suffix, convert to signed numbers (Dr negative) before checking.
- Two dates. Keep both Txn Date and Value Date; use one consistently.
- Long statements. UPI-heavy accounts run to many pages; repeated page headers must not become transactions.
- Indian number grouping (
1,23,456.78) and day-first dates.
The check: opening balance + credits − debits = closing balance, and every row's Balance = previous Balance + Credit − Debit.
Converting an SBI statement with Footed
Footed opens the PDF in your browser; enter the password there if it's encrypted, and nothing but the extracted text leaves your device (processed in memory, not stored). Footed stitches wrapped descriptions, converts Cr/Dr balances to signs, and checks every row against the running balance, highlighting the first row where it breaks. Download Excel, CSV or OFX.
