Wells Fargo statement to Excel or CSV

Wells Fargo gives you two ways to get transactions out: a spreadsheet download of recent account activity, and PDF statements going back years. Which one you should use depends on how far back you need to go. Here's how to get each, and what to watch for when converting the PDF.

First: do you need the PDF?

Wells Fargo lets you download account activity as a spreadsheet or for Quicken Web Connect. By default it captures the last 90 days, and for certain accounts up to 18 months of activity is available if you choose the time frame (Wells Fargo). Checking, savings and money market histories are viewable online for up to 18 months.

If everything you need falls inside that window, use the activity download. For anything older, use the statements.

How to download a Wells Fargo statement PDF

From Wells Fargo's statement FAQ (Wells Fargo):

  1. Sign on to Wells Fargo Online.
  2. Go to Statements & Documents.
  3. Select the account and the time period, then select the statement. You can select only one statement at a time; your browser may save it straight to your downloads folder.
  4. Save it with a descriptive name (Wells Fargo suggests something like "CheckingMarch2019.pdf").

How far back: up to 7 years for deposit accounts, home mortgages and trust/managed investment accounts; up to 2 years for credit cards, home equity lines and personal loans/lines; up to 12 months for auto loans. After an account closes, online statements may remain available for about 90 days (Wells Fargo). Download what you need before closing an account.

Wells Fargo states that its online statement is the same as the paper statement and is an official document.

What a Wells Fargo statement looks like

  • Ending daily balance, not a balance per transaction. Wells Fargo's Deposit Account Agreement defines the ending daily balance as the balance reflecting all posted deposits and withdrawals after nightly processing, calculated once a day (Deposit Account Agreement). Statements report balances on that daily basis, so several transactions on one day share a single balance.
  • Activity grouped into deposits, checks and other withdrawals. Wells Fargo's own (older) sample statement shows an Activity summary (opening balance, deposits and interest, withdrawals, closing balance), then Deposits and interest, a Checks table with check number, date and amount (an asterisk marks a gap in the check sequence), Other withdrawals, and a Daily balance summary (Wells Fargo sample PDF). Current statements look different but follow the same logic.
  • Combined statements. Wells Fargo can combine checking and savings on one statement, and Prime and Premier Checking statements may include several linked accounts (Wells Fargo).
  • Savings statements are often quarterly unless the account has electronic transfers or automatic transfers, or is combined with checking (Deposit Account Agreement).

Common pitfalls converting Wells Fargo statements

  • Row-by-row balance checks don't apply. With one balance per day, check at each day's end: previous day's ending balance + that day's deposits − that day's withdrawals = this day's ending balance. And check the whole statement: opening + deposits − withdrawals = closing.
  • Combined statements need splitting. Two accounts on one statement means two opening balances and two closing balances. Reconcile each account separately before importing into the right account in your books.
  • Check tables laid out in two columns. A side-by-side checks table can be read across rather than down, pairing the wrong number with the wrong amount. Verify check numbers against amounts.
  • Quarterly savings statements cover three months; don't mistake them for a missing statement.

Converting a Wells Fargo statement with Footed

Footed opens the PDF in your browser and sends only the extracted text for parsing (processed in memory, not stored). It reconciles opening balance + every extracted transaction = closing balance, and checks against printed balances wherever the statement provides them, highlighting anything that disagrees. Export to Excel, CSV or OFX.
